About Us

The Journalists in Distress (JiD) Network is an informal platform that enables member organizations to share information about journalists in distress and collaborate on emergency efforts. Established in 2006, the Network facilitates coordination among its members—international organizations with mandates to protect freedom of expression—allowing them to address specific cases, streamline their efforts, and avoid duplication. The JiD Network doesn’t provide direct assistance to journalists – assistance is only provided via the Network’s member organizations based on their capacity and eligibility criteria. The JiD Network itself does not engage in advocacy or media development activities.

What We Can Do

  • Facilitate and provide emergency support to media workers through our member organizations, per each JiD member’s mandate and capacity. Some members focus primarily on providing funding, while others implement specific activities and offer tailored assistance to those in need.
  • Ensuring JiD’s member organizations work together to address emerging and active crises threatening journalist safety and media freedom.

While the JiD Network operates exclusively through its members, it remains open to collaboration with other organizations and donors to enhance collective impact.
